The All-in-One Styling Tool

Written by Advice Team on November 4, 2015

Airstylers are this year's must-have beauty tool and every girl who loves their hair needs one in her arsenal. The ultimate hair styling appliance, airstylers combine a hair dryer with a round brush to give you an incredibly versatile, easy to use, all-in-one styling tool.

Not only can you use your airstyler to create super-sleek straight styles, soft waves or big, bouncy curls you can also use them to create volume at the crown, give limp hair a bit of oomph, shape your fringe or flick out your ends - with an airstylier you really can have your cake and eat it too! If you like to wear your hair differently every day of the week, then an airstyler is about to become your new best friend.

As with all hair styling tools, there are numerous options when it comes to airstylers so choose one with a barrel size and temperature setting to suit your hair type and length. Basically the larger the barrel the bigger the curl so for long hair larger barrels work better whereas smaller barrels are better suited for short hair. Whichever barrel size you choose, look for bristles with cool tips to help prevent heat damage to your scalp and hair.

Most airstylers are plugged into the mains, but there are also cordless varieties that are powered by batteries and even butane cartridges. We strongly suggest that you steer clear of battery powered styling tools for everyday use — they’re really only designed to be used for occasional convenience and you will end up spending a small fortune on batteries.

It’s best to work on nearly dry hair so following a hair wash, rough dry your hair with a hair dryer first to remove any excess moisture. Ensure you use a heat protection spray or serum before you blow-dry to minimise heat damage. Once your hair is about 80% dry you’re ready to start creating your style.

The easiest way to work through your hair is in sections. Split your hair into 2.5cm - 5cm sections and clip each section to the top of your head. It’s easiest to start at the bottom and work up, so start with the bottom sections first and as each section is completed move on until all your hair is styled.

How you style will depend on the look you are going for but the fundamental rules are the same. Using the lowest temperature setting for your hair type place the brush under the section of hair, close to the roots and brush (without the brush rotating) through the section to remove any knots. Once the section is tangle free you can start using the rotating head to brush through the hair section from top to bottom. For more oomph hold the brush in place at the root for a few seconds to add extra volume before moving down the length.

Depending on whether you are curling or straightening, you will need to use the appropriate technique for your hair style. For slick styles the brush should be rotating through the section without the hair becoming wound round the brush head. For waves and curls allow the rotation to wind hair around the brush starting at the bottom. Once your hair is wound around the brush stop the rotation and let the heat set the curl for a few seconds before releasing. To release the section of hair, press and hold the opposite rotation button to unwind the hair. Finish off by setting your style for longer-lasting hold. Switch to the cool setting and brush through each section one last time before spritzing with a low hold hair spray.

Airstylers really do give you the ability to create a salon quality blow-dry day in, day out - the hardest part is deciding which look you want to go for today!
